Buran Ghati Trek

The Buran Ghati Trek gives you an adventurous experience in the untouched parts of the Himalayas. It allows the trekkers to experience forest trails amidst different coniferous treesand rhododendrons, and vast meadows with lush greenery. Overall, you can say that the Buran Ghati Trek puts several experiences in one basket. The trek begins in an ancient village called Janglik in the Kinnaur District of Himachal Pradesh. The place is around 150 KM from Shimla. The highest point of the Buran Ghati Trek is the Buran Ghati Pass, which is situated at a height of 15000 ft.

What makes the Buran Ghati Trek special?

The trekkers can enjoy observing the old buildings and local architecture before starting the trek. Once the trek begins, the trekkers follow the trail through the forests before reaching the Dayara Bugyal (meadow). Detailed Itenerary

Day 01: 150 km drive from Shimla to Janglik (9,200 ft)

 

Assemble early in the morning (by 8 a.m.) in Shimla and board your vehicles for the drive to Janglik. We travel through mixed forests along the Pabbar River. The sides of the road are lined with villages with beautiful Himachal homes and wheat step fields. The road is in poor condition from Chirgaon onwards. After crossing the Pabbar River at Tonglu, the road climbs to Janglik. The journey takes about 8-9 hours.

Day 02: Janglikh to Dayara Thach (11,000 ft)

 

We pass through the homes of the villagers. We travel through the village in less than half an hour. The trail starts with a steep incline. Stop after you’ve climbed a long way to get a clear view of the valley. You can see Janglik, Tonglu, and other nearby villages from here. The trail reaches the woods and gradually ascends. After a long climb, walking under the shade of trees is a welcome change. The scenery along the trail is breathtaking. The path goes into and out of the forest a few times before arriving at our destination for the day and camping for the night.

Day 03: Dayara Thanch to Litham Thanch (11,800 Feet) 3 Hours approx

 

Get up early in the morning to glimpse the sun’s golden rays dropping on the grass in the meadow. With a hot cup of tea, take in the scenery. Forests, meadows, and gushing streams of water make up the majority of today’s trail. We stroll through the meadows on our way to the Gunas Pass. The view of the Dhauladhar range after crossing a stream is breathtaking. We reach the forest of Bhoj trees a few minutes later (Silver Birch). We eventually come across another stream. Cross it and you’ll get your first sight of Litham. We’d go for a stroll in a lovely meadow once more. We cross the Chandranahan Stream and arrive at our day’s campsite across the meadow. Litham is a lovely camping spot.

Day 04: Chandranahan Lake Excursion (13800 ft)

 

Chandranahan Lake is made up of glacier tarns and perennial snow flanks from the mountains surrounding it. Take the shepherd’s trail to get to the top of the waterfall. From the waterfalls, it takes around 1 hour to reach Chandranahan Lake. This lake offers a view of a glacial amphitheatre nestled in a bowl. Before descending to Litham, take in the snow and stunning stone cairns.

Day 05: Litham to Nalabansh (11700 ft)

 

At 13,000 feet, the trek from Litham Thach to Nalabansh takes 4 hours. On the right, pass through the cliffs of the Rupin Valley. The first view of Buran Ghati and Gunas waterfall comes as you descend the valley. Nalabansh is reached after a little more than an hour of climbing. Relax at the campsite, then stay for dinner and the night.

Day 06: Nalabansh to Munirang (11150 ft)

It will be the most adventurous thing you have ever done, with a thrilling climb mainly on snow at 15,000 feet. In the snowline, it takes two hours to descend. The road to your overnight campsite is on the other side of the flowing water. Munirang is a lovely place to stay for dinner and the night.

Day 07: Munirang to Barua Village (6600 ft)

It will be the most adventurous thing you have ever done, with a thrilling climb mainly on snow at 15,000 feet. In the snowline, it takes two hours to descend. On the other side, through the rushing stream. The trek is the most diverse one can see, particularly on the way down. More descent leads to gushing streams and apple orchids, adding to the allure of your journey to Bruua Khud. Spend time with ecstatic villagers who are happy to hear your tales. Take a car or follow the path to Karcham. The way to your campsite for an overnight stay is to drive to Sangla or Reckong Peo for a better road link to Shimla. Munirang is a lovely place to stay for dinner and the night.

    The monsoon months are ideal for the trekkers who are looking for greenery as the meadows look beautiful. Necessary precautions should be taken, as rainfall is quite frequent during this time.

  • Autumn (October – November)

    Like the summer months, the Buran Ghati Trek is accessible in the autumn as well.

    The skies are clear just like the summer but the weather is much colder. The temperature ranges from -7 °C to 15 °C.
    Overview
    The landscapes look beautiful and serene and is ideal for an escape from the busy schedules. The skies are clear and the trekkers can get unobstructed views of the surrounding peaks.

    The accessibility is less compared to the other seasons but can be attempted with proper equipment and guidance.

    The heavy snowfall during the winter months makes it challenging for the trekkers to reach the Buran Ghati Pass and may require technical skills in some patches.

Mountain Ranges, River Valley & Lake:

The Buran Ghati Trek is in the Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh, India. It takes the trekkers through multiple mountain ranges, river valleys, and majestic lakes. The trekkers find themselves in serenity amidst breathtaking scenery in the Buran Ghati Trek.

Mountain Ranges

Shivalik Range
The Shivalik range includes the Shivalik Hills, which are the foothills of the Himalayas. These hills can be seen at the beginning of the trek. The trekkers can also observe the valleys of the Shivalik range, parallel to the Hills.

Dhauladhar range
The trail to Litham lets the trekkers experience this majestic mountain range. The Dhauladharrange can be observed in the southern part of the trek. The primary peak in the Dhauladharrange includes Hanuman Tibba (5982 m).

Pir Pinjal range
The snow-capped peaks of the Pir Pinjal range look amazing. Photography enthusiasts can collect pictures of this range from different parts of the trek as it is the primary mountain range that can be observed in the Buran Ghati Trek. The most important peaks of the PirPinjal range include Deo Tibba (6001 m) and Indrasan (6221 m).

Kinner Kailash range
The trekkers can witness the breathtaking Kinnaur Kailash range on the northern side of the Buran Ghati Trek. The glaciers and peaks are rugged and extremely photogenic. The locals say that the Kinnaur Kailash range holds a high spiritual value as it is considered to be Lord Shiva’s abode.

River Valley

Pabbar Valley
The Pabbar Valley offers the trekkers with amazing landscape every season. The valley is situated amidst rocky terrain, meadows and forests and is filled with a wide variety of flora and fauna. The trekkers can witness dense forests, grasslands and different flowers. The villages and terraced farming make the Pabbar Valley look beautiful and serene. The Valley receives heavy snowfall during the winter season and therefore attracts many snow lovers.

Lake

Chandranahan Lake
The Chandranahan Lake is frozen almost throughout the year and it is situated at an altitude of 13123 ft. The lake is formed by glacial water and is one of the primary attractions in the Buran Ghati Trek. The trekkers get overwhelmed by the beauty of the frozen lake amidst different snow-covered peaks as it looks like a wonderland.

Glaciers

The Buran Ghati Glacier
The Buran Ghati Glacier is just below the summit of the Buran Ghati Pass. The region is rocky and surrounded by many snow-covered peaks. Crossing the glacier is adventurous for most trekkers as it is challenging and has some tricky sections. The critical terrain gives the trekkers a sense of excitement, making the Buran Ghati Trek more thrilling.

Meadows

Dayara Bugyal
On the third day, the trekkers reach this peaceful alpine meadow. The primary attraction of the Dayara Bugyal is the colourful flowers and herds of cattle grazing across the grassland. The local shepherds are also welcoming, and the trekkers can have a good time talking to them.

Chandranahan Bugyal
The trekkers reach the Chandranahan Bugyal just before reaching the Chandranahan Lake. The meadow’s jaw-dropping beauty makes it a perfect photography destination. During the summer months, the Chandranahan Bugyal is full of flowers and lush greenery. The trekkers can also witness the tiny streams flowing down from the glaciers. The calmness of this place also makes it a good spot for the trekkers to rest after a long hike.

High-Altitude Passes

The Buran Ghati Pass (15000 ft)
The Buran Ghati Trek is primarily focused on the Buran Ghati Pass, which is the highest point of the entire trek. The trekkers cross all the obstacles to reach the top of the Buran Ghati Pass, which offers panoramic views of the entire region and gives the trekkers a sense of achievement. The trail to the top of the pass is challenging and, therefore, demands good physical fitness.

    The primary trees in the dense forests of the Buran Ghati Trek include oak, deodar and pine trees. The large canopies of trees provide the trekkers with a cool and calm environment. The dense forests are common in the lower altitudes of the Buran Ghati Trek.

    Rhododendrons
    The rhododendrons attract many trekkers across the country because of their breathtaking beauty. They can be found in red, pink and white shades which look like a paradise,especially in the Spring and Summer months. The Rhododendrons are one of the reasons, the valleys and meadows look appealing to the trekkers.

    Wildflowers
    The colourful wild Himalayan flowers look vibrant and photogenic across the meadows, hence, the trekkers capture beautiful memories here. The primary Wildflowers include primulas, Bluebells, Himalayan Geraniums and Golden Buttercups.

    Edible Plants
    The meadows are also covered with many edible plants which are mostly by the locals. It also enhances the beauty of the region along with the flowers and forests. The trekkers can also witness Tulsi, rajma and corn plantations along the way.

    Medicinal Plants
    Several medicinal plants can also be found near the trails and also in the meadows. The locals use these plants to treat digestive problems, pain, bruises, respiratory problems and mental disorders. The trekkers find this quite informative amidst all the scenic beauty around. Some of the medical plants include Wild Ginger, aloe vera, mullein, Himalayan arnica and many more.

    Mammals
    The Himalayan Tahr can be sighted in the meadows quite often. There are various other mammals in the forests, valleys and higher altitudes which include black bears, leopards, sheep and wild boars.

    Himalayan Monal, Golden Eagle and other species
    The Himalayan Monal is the most popular in this region among others because of its vibrant feathers. It is also the State bird of Uttarakhand and can be seen quite often during the summer and spring months.
    The Golden Eagle also attracts trekkers primarily because of its large size. It is mostly found near the Buran Ghati Pass and preys on small animals and birds. Some other avian species include the Himalayan Griffon Vulture, Western Tragopan, Lammergeier and many more.

    Rare Glimpses
    Snow Leopards are the most popular among the rarely-seen animals in the Buran Ghati Trek. They have thick fur and unique spots throughout the body and mostly prey at night. The Musk Deer is also a popular animal which is rarely seen in forest areas. It attracts many trekkers because of the musk-producing glands. Other rare animals include Blue Sheep and Ibexes. The Buran Ghati Trek gives the trekkers many opportunities to stop for a moment and admire the beauty and creation of nature amidst all the obstacles along the way. Things to Carry:

Hiking Shoes

  • Type: We recommend that you have to look for shoes that are water-resistant and have a deep yet flexible sole to sustain on Himalayan terrains.

Note: Dynamic rough terrains hold uncertain threats. The pair of shoes that has the advantage of overcoming those threats will help you to maintain your confidence in balancing.

Backpack

  • Type: It purely depends on the kind of Trek you are planning to do.
    • (15-20) litres will be ideal for short treks of (1-3) days.
    • (40-60) litres will be ideal for long treks of (3 – 10) days.

Note: A backpack comes under very essential for the activity like trekking. You will have a requirement of your Backpack throughout the journey for your belongings and all the essentials you need. We recommend you test the bag and choose it according to your height, the Trek where you are taking it & and the comfort it provides.

Daypack

  • Type: A (10-15) litres waterproof daypack is all you need to have with you for the Summit.

Note: Your Daypack will be for those Summit days and shorter days when you just need your essentials (wallet, small water bottle, sunglass, power bank, etc.) with you.

Clothing

  • Collared T-shirts – Carrying 2 – 3 units of collared T-shirts will be ideal. The collar will help you to keep your neck away from direct sunlight and not too exposed to the Sun and getting sunburnt.
  • Padded Jacket – Ensure that the jacket is wind-resistant & and capable of keeping you warm at -10 °C to -12 °C temperature.
  • Fleece Jacket Fleece jackets are made of very soft and cosy material. It helps you to maintain a comfortable body temperature. Keep 2 Fleece Jackets with you.
  • Thermals – You will have a requirement of only 1 pair of this in the Winter, For Summer it could be under consideration. It is made of pure cotton and designed in such a way that body heat is blocked between its layers. It will keep you warm during the nights when the temperature falls.
  • Trek Pants – You will have a requirement of 2 units of Trekking Pants with you always. Between them, one must be convertible. Ensure it is made of Cotton or windproof light material & and provides maximum durable comfort.
  • Sun Caps –The Sunlight might be harsh at higher Altitudes and the direct exposure of sunlight to your head harms your skin. Carry Sun Caps to keep your head cool.
  • Woolen CapsYou will need woollen caps during the nights to keep your ears and head warm from the very cold breeze.
  • Waterproof Gloves – You will require waterproof gloves for cold and wet sections of the Trek. Always keep your hands clean and warm, avoid letting your hands wet to get the supporting grip and balance.

Trek Accessories

  • Trekking Pole:
    The Trekking/Hiking Pole saves 60% of your energy for conquering a steep slope at a higher altitude. It is advisable to carry a trekking pole with you for the treks.
  • Head-lamp or Torch: A head-lamp is another important thing that also comes under mandatory items for our Treks. It will help you to deal with the dark. Headlamps become more effective to walk in dark cold weather without approaching through your hand. Featured Torch is also ok for uphill.

Daily essentials

  • Toiletries: We recommend you carry all your Toiletries essentials and all other personal belongings by yourself to avoid borrowing. Here are some items you could take- tooth-cleaning paste, dental brush, lip moisturizer, skin hydrating cream, facial cleanser, a range of vital creams and items, bathroom tissue/toilet paper, menstrual pads, along with other important personal care items like shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, and shaving supplies.
  • Containers & Vessels: It’s advisable to bring your water containers; we recommend two bottles each with a capacity of 1 liter. Additionally, for both ease and hygiene reasons, please carry your food containers to use for the meals we supply. The metal bottle comes in handy for hot water served in the camps.
  • Recommended Medicines:
    Gauze 1 small roll, Dexamethasone one strip, Nifedipine 5 tablets, Band-aid 10 strips, Avomine 4 tablets (motion sickness), Avil 25mg 4 tablets (allergies), Combiflam 4 tablets (Pain killer), Crepe bandage 3 to 5 meters, Disprin 6 tablets (headache), Crocin 6 tablets (fever), Digene 10 tablets (acidity), Omez/ Rantadine 10 tablets (antacids), Norflox TZ & Lomofen 6 tablets each (diarrhea), Diamox 10 tablets (to prevent AMS), Cotton 1 small roll

For the Buran Ghati Trek, you must bring specific documents and submit them to the trek leader at the base camp. These include a copy of the Disclaimer, along with one photocopy and the original of a government-issued photo ID. Additionally, a doctor’s medical certificate confirming your fitness for high-altitude conditions is required.

Risk of slip/skid:

Nature of Risk:

The trail, particularly in winter (December and January), may be scattered with black ice, leading to a risk of slipping or skidding. Additionally, the unpredictable Himalayan weather adds to the challenge.

Safety Precautions:


  • Briefing session at the base camp regarding slip/skid risks.
  • You will get a trained trek leader’s guidance on maintaining balance and proper use of trekking poles.
  • Provision of crampons by Discovery Hike for snow-filled trails, to reduce risk of skidding by up to 95%.
  • Continuous awareness communication from the trek leader during the trek.
  • Choosing trekking shoes with a good grip is crucial.

    High Altitude Risks:
    Ascending from 6,400 feet to 11,500 feet over 4-5 days may lead to Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE), and High-Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE), especially at higher camps.

Safety Precautions:

  • Start DIAMOX from the first day to reduce AMS risk.
  • Trained leaders are recognizing AMS symptoms and equipped with a high-altitude medical kit.
  • Oxygen cylinders are available for safety.
  • Immediate descent if conditions worsen.

Dealing with Blisters and Cramps:Blisters, cuts, and cramps can occur on uneven trails.

Safety Precautions:

  • Trekkers to inform the trek leader promptly.
  • Well-fitting, breathable trekking shoes are recommended.
  • Treatment kit with trek leader and application of cramp spray for leg cramps.

 

Weather Risks at High Altitude:
Unpredictable weather, particularly in the Himalayas, can worsen quickly.

  • Provision of all-weather tents to cope with different weather challenges.

    Communication Risks:  Communication signals weaken and may be lost completely at higher altitudes.

    Use of walkie-talkies for alternative communication between different campsites.
  • Emergency/ Immediate rescue: Severe health issues or emergencies may necessitate immediate rescue.

Initiating Cancellation:

Cancellation Due to Unforeseen Events:
In case of trek cancellation by Discovery Hike owing to unexpected events such as natural disasters, floods, or political unrest, we will issue a trek voucher. This voucher is valid for one year and can be used for the same or a different trek.

Cancellation Due to Personal Reasons:
If you decide to cancel your trek for personal reasons, the following terms apply under our cancellation policy:

No Cash Refunds:
We do not offer cash refunds once a booking is completed. Instead, a voucher for the same or a reduced amount will be provided.

Cancellation 30 Days or More Before Trek:
If you cancel 30 days or more before the trek start date, a voucher for the full booking amount will be issued.

Cancellation 20-29 Days Before Trek:
For cancellations made between 20 to 29 days before the trek start date, 50% of the booking amount will be deducted. The remaining amount will be provided as a voucher.

Cancellation Less Than 20 Days Before Trek: No voucher will be issued for cancellations made less than 20 days before the trek start date.

The Buran Ghati Trek covers every aspect of a perfect trekking destination. The trekkers witness the rich flora and fauna along with the breathtaking views of the mountain ranges, valleys and lakes. The serene meadows and challenging glaciers together provide the trekkers with the best memories and new perspective towards life. It helps the trekkers to be mentally stronger and face any challenges with ease. The Buran Ghati Trek also gives the trekkers an opportunity to dive deep into the rich culture and seasonal activities of the local people. Some of the seasonal and occasional activities have been discussed below.

Seasonal Highlights

Spring (March to May)
The Spring season makes the entire region refreshing and vibrant as a variety of flowers bloom during this season. The colourful Rhododendrons and different varieties of wild Himalayan flowers make the valleys and meadows, serene and beautiful. The views are appealing and photogenic due to the clear skies.

Pleasant Weather:
The trekkers find the spring season, ideal for attempting the trek as the temperatures are not harsh. This season is best suited for enjoying the trekking experience without extreme weather conditions.

Summer (June to August)
The summer season witnesses the melting of the snow which reveals the breathtaking view of the meadows. The lush greenery rejuvenates the minds of the trekkers amidst all the obstacles across the trail. The dense forests with various coniferous trees become visible.

Wildlife:
The trekkers can witness the diverse fauna in the summer season. The Black bear, leopards, musk deer and foxes can be spotted in different
parts of the trek. The avian diversity is also on display during this time and the trekkers can enjoy bird-watching while resting in the meadows.

Autumn (September to November)

The Autumn attracts many trekkers because of the weather. The sky is clear and the weather is cool but devoid of any hard conditions, unlike the winter. One can say that Autumn is a perfect blend of the summer and winter seasons. Therefore, it becomes the first preference of the trekkers to complete the Buran Ghati Trek during the Autumn season.

Ideal weather:
The weather during the Autumn season is perfect for trekking and enhances the overall trekking experience. The clear skies give the trekkers an opportunity to enjoy the surrounding peaks including the magnificent Kinner-Kailash.

Monsoon (June to September)

The monsoon season is not ideal for attempting any trek as Uttarakhand receives heavy rainfall during this season. Landslides are common and the trails of the trek become extremely slippery and challenging for the trekkers. Hence, trekking during the monsoons is not advisable.

Winter (December to February)

The winter season makes the Buran Ghati Trek look heavenly and majestic. The meadows are fully covered with snow which looks like white fields. The trekkers get to see snow-covered peaks with rugged terrain.

Challenging route:
The trails look beautiful during the winter but are equally challenging. Only experienced trekkers should attempt the
Buran Ghati Trek during the winter as prior experience and proper trekking gear are required.

Occasional Activities

Fulaich Festival
The Fulaich festival occurs in the Kinnaur district to celebrate the new blooming flowers. The locals pick flowers and offer them to the local deities as a symbol of gratitude. Folk dance and music is performed by the locals.

Bishu Festival
The Himachali people offer gratitude to the local deities before the harvest season in the Bishu festival. The trekkers can take part in the community gatherings and learn more about the festival. Traditional songs and dances are also a part of this festival.

Sazo Festival
The Sazo festival is celebrated by performing traditional rituals for the local deities as a symbol of farewell. It is celebrated in the winter season as the locals believe that their local deities move back to heaven during the harsh winter season.

Camping
The trekkers can enjoy the camping experience at night during the Buran Ghati Trek. The autumn and summer months offer clear skies which are ideal for star gazing. This adds a sense of charm for the trekkers, being surrounded by the majestic mountain ranges.

Photography
The opportunities for capturing the best shot are endless in the Buran Ghati Trek. Every season has different things to offer which can be quite overwhelming. Snow-covered meadows in the winter may be the best landscape for some people while others might prefer the vibrant and colourful meadows of the autumn.

Bird watching
It can be a very informative experience for the trekkers to witness beautiful birds, showcasing their various characteristics. There are many bird species including the Himalayan Monal which is the State Bird of Uttarakhand. The bird-watching experience adds a hint of joy among the trekkers during the trek.

The pickup for the Buran Ghati Trek is scheduled at Shimla/Kullu. The vehicle will wait for a maximum of half an hour or more in case of delays or genuine issues raised by the trekkers.

The best time to undertake the Buran Ghati Trek is from March to June and September to November. These months offer pleasant weather and captivating landscapes.

In summer, temperatures on the Buran Ghati Trek can range from 0°C to 15°C, while in winter, it may drop to -8°C to -15°C.

The trek concludes in Janglik for the Janglik-Janglik Package, and we will arrange transport from Janglik at an additional cost of Rs. 6,000/- which may be shareable if other trekkers are available. Generally, we keep the drop-off vehicle Ready in advance for the Shimla/Kullu to Shimla/Kullu Package. The expected arrival in Shimla/Kullu is by 18:30.

Tents are usually shared by three trekkers. If you prefer a two-person tent, you can opt for it at an extra fee of Rs. 2000 per person. Payment for customization needs to be made instantly through Cash/bank transfer.
